Obituary

Norma J. Sweeny peacefully and beautifully passed surrounded by her family on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, in Temple, Texas at the grand age of 94. The funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on September 12th at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home, 500 W. Barton Ave, Temple Texas. Reverend Michael S. Snell will officiate. A time of visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on September 12th, immediately preceding the funeral service. A graveside service will be held at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission, Texas on September 17th at 2pm.

Norma was born in Norman, Oklahoma on February 17, 1928. She attended University of Oklahoma before she met James Sweeny at a U.S.O. event. They were married on August 15, 1946, and settled their family in Scott City, Kansas. In the summer of 1959, they moved to McAllen, Texas. On December 21, 1986, her forever and only love, James, passed away. Two years later, she moved to Temple, Texas to reside closer to her children and their families. She was an active member of First Christian Church of Temple, Texas; and adored her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and dogs. She took every opportunity to spend time with and make memories with her family. Everyone was better for knowing Norma, in fact the last top she ever wore said “Be a nice human” and there were never any truer words.

Norma is survived by her children, Linda and Terry Cover, Gary and Gina Sweeny, and James “Jim” Sweeny; her grandchildren Jason and Jessica Sweeny, Michael and Rachel Schmidt, Tamara and R. Brandon Caldwell, Derrick and Susannah Schmidt, Eric and Julia Cover, and James Sweeny; great-grandchildren Shelby Schmidt, Matthew Schmidt, Abilgail Schmidt, Kyle Campbell, Avaleigh Sweeny, Jack Campbell, Jeremiah Schmidt, Astoria Schmidt, Presten Caldwell, Hayden Caldwell, Grady Conine, and Ethan Conine; and so many nieces and nephews.  Norma was preceded in death by her parents John Slajer and Lillie Nemecek Slajer; her husband James Herschel Sweeny; her siblings John Slajer, Jr., Leo Slajer, Joseph “Vernon” Slajer, and Juanita Mayer; and her children Karen Elaine Sweeny and Karen Sue Schmidt.

The family of Norma wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Park Place Manor, First Christian Church of Temple, ER staff at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple, and the Caldwell and Arroyo families.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bell County Animal Shelter.
