William Burney Howell, Sr.

Funeral Service for William Burney Howell, Sr. 87 of Temple and formerly of Rockdale, will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at HarperTalasek Funeral Home Chapel in Temple with Rev. Rebecca Fox Nuelle officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Garden of Memories.

Mr. Howell died Thursday, July 7 in a local hospital. Mr. He was born December 1, 1923 in Fairfield, Alabama to Amy Westbrook Howell and Henry Howze Howell. He graduated in 1941 from Woodland High School, in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Auburn University and graduated from Georgia Tech University with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1945. He served in the US Naval Reserve during WW ll from 1943 1946. He met his wife of 64 years, Violet Irma Shurr while stationed at the Annapolis Naval Academy in Maryland. They married in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania on July 12, 1947.
He started his career with Allis Chalmers Mfg. Co in Milwaukee, Wis. In 1946. He joined Alcoa Aluminum Co., in Badin, North Carolina in 1948 as Senior Electrical Engineer, leaving as Superintendant of Electrical Engineers in 1968. He also worked on Alcoa projects in Pittsburgh, Pa, then moved on to Alcoa Point Comfort Works in 1968. He moved to Rockdale Alcoa Works in 1972 as the Chief Electrical Engineer. He retired after 34 years with Alcoa in 1982. After retiring he enjoyed their travels in Europe throughout Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland. He also loved driving throughout the Southwest of US, especially New Mexico. Burney was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church USA having served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Elder. He was last member of the 1St Presbyterian Church of Rockdale, TX. The last 2 years he and his wife have resided at Garden Estates Retirement Community in Temple, TX.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Henry H. Howell, sister Amy Francis Howell.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Shurr Howell, his five children and their spouses: Daughter Susan Aldos Barefoot of Wilmington, DE, son William Burney Howell, Jr. and wife Lisa of Grenada, MS, daughter Diane Howell Old of Dallas, TX. daughter Cindy and spouse Don Havard of Troy, Tx and daughter Janice and spouse David Haverland of College Station, TX., 11 grandchildren and 5 great grand children.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorials to the 1St Presbyterian Church of Rockdale or their favorite charities.

Visitation will be 2:003:00pm, Saturday, July 9th, 2011 at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple.
