Virgil Eugene Shilling of Temple, Texas passed away Sunday, February 4th, 2018.
Virgil was born on January 27, 1937 in Oenaville, TX to William Paul and Vera (Hallmark) Shilling. He attended Oenaville School prior to graduating from Temple High School in 1955 and Durham Business College in Austin. Virgil served for eight years in the United States Air Force in Alaska and at the NATO Headquarters in Naples, Italy. After his service in the Air Force, he worked for and retired from Santa Fe Railroad. Virgil's love of travel led him to his final career with Continental Airlines in Houston, TX.
Virgil was a member of Temple's Elks Lodge 138 and American Legion Post 133, was a lifelong Temple Wildcats fan, and had a deep passion for and knowledge of Texas football as evidenced by his complete collection of "Dave Campbell's Texas Football" magazines.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Ray Shilling. He is survived by his canine companion Galloway, sister Pallie Dearman of Mt. Prospect, IL, brother Carl Shilling of Silsbee, TX, and cousin David Shilling of Harker Heights, TX. He is also survived by his nieces and nephew, Carla Amerman and husband, Ryan of Austin, TX, Amanda Brown and husband, Daniel of Vernon, TX, Lisa Gruschkus, and husband Stephen, of Missouri City, TX, and Will Dearman, and wife Cara, of Mt. Prospect, IL.
Visitation will be held from noon until 2 pm Thursday, February 8th, 2018 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. His funeral, with military honors, will be held at 2 pm. Burial at Oenaville Cemetery will immediately follow the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Central Texas or to the animal rescue organization of your choice.
