Colonel Thomas J Rogers died on April 4, 2013 at Scott and White Hospital. He was born in Houston Texas in 1920. He graduated from Reagan High School where he played football and participated in victory over Mexico Polytechnic University in Mexico City in 1937. After two years at the University of Texas, he entered the Army Air Force as a flying Cadet in December 1940 and completed pilot training in August 1941. He married Ruth Mae Van Hekken in Houston on August 17, 1941.
During 30 years in the Air Force, his assignments included five years in Training Command, seventeen years in the Strategic Air Command, four years in the Pentagon, and fifteen months in the Pacific Air Force. Some notable assignments included Commander 26th Bomb Squadron 11 Bomb Wing. Carswell AFB in BCommander of Operations 380th Bomb Wing, Plattsburgh AFB, New York in B47 aircraft, Commander Moron Air Base near Seville, Spain Assistant to the Inspector General Air Force Headquarters, and Commander of the Chiang Chang Kong Air Base, Taiwan. While assigned to the Pentagon, he was President of the Protestant Men of the Pentagon.
Some awards include The Legion of Merit, Air Metal, Three Commendations Metals, Adopted Son of Seville, Spain Metal of Justice Republic of China, and Alpha Sigma Delta Scholastic Award Univ. of Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Rogers, his 2nd wife Winfrey Howard Rogers, and his daughter Carole.
Survivors include wife, Charlene Young Rogers, Son Thomas J Jr. and wife Sharon of Austin, Soninlaw Bruce of Herndon, Va. two grandsons and a great grandson and granddaughter.
Viewing will be at HarperTalasek Funeral Home on Tuesday April 9, 2013 from 68 pm.
Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston 11:30 Thursday April 11, 2013 with full military honors.
