Steve Nation

d. October 23, 2014

Our oneofakind brother, Steven Everett Nation, passed away on October 23, 2014 at the age of 68. He was the first child born to Juanita Fay Hasha Nation and Benjamin Everett Nation, Jr. in New Iberia, Louisiana on January 24, 1946. He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his brothers, Glenn Lee Nation and wife Helen of Edinburg, Texas Dean Michael Nation and wife, Connie of Daingerfield, Texas his sister, Brenda Sue Nation and husband, Allen Corder of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his niece, Tammy Elizabeth NationLeger and husband Chris of Lake Charles, Louisiana and nephew, Glenn Lee Nation, Jr. of Iowa, Louisiana and great nephews, Hunter Leger and Justin Nation.

Steve graduated from Berwick High School in Morgan City, Louisiana in 1964 and served in the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge. He retired from Kirby Inland Marine in Channelview, Texas after 20 years of service.

Steve was a scratch golfer, who was taught to play the game at an early age by our dad, who was selftaught and won numerous base tournaments during his time in the military. He had an uncanny ability to recall course layouts and specific holes of most every course he played, including the club he used and the score he shot on particular holes. One of his proudest achievements was making three holeinones in as many months. After retirement, he worked at Gus Wortham Municipal Golf Course in Houston, Texas until his health declined.

Steve was a good friend to a lot of people and would literally give the shirt off his back or his last dollar if he thought someone needed it more than him. He usually needed it more than the other person, but that didnt stop him. He was a devoted friend of Bill W. and was very proud of his 32 years of sobriety and the number of people he helped in the AA program.

During the last three years he was a resident of the William R. Courtney Texas Veterans Home in Temple, Texas where he was lovingly cared for by the nurses and staff who became part of his extended family. He maintained his sense of humor throughout his extended disability. His motorized wheelchair became his car, and to no ones surprise he flirted shamelessly with the ladies to sit on his lap and go for a ride or to give him a hug. Our family expresses our deep appreciation for the kindness, respect and friendship shown to him while he lived there.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, November 23, 2014 at PrienHighland Memorial Park, 6325 Common Street, Lake Charles, Louisiana 70607. The family requests that memorial contributions in Steves honor be made to the William R. Courtney Texas Veterans Home, 1424 Martin Luther King, Jr. Lane, Temple, Texas 765045491.

HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple is in charge of arrangements.
