Sam H. Cater, Jr.

Sam H. Cater, Jr., 79, a lifelong resident of Temple passed away Wednesday at a local hospital.

Sam was born August 17, 1929 to Sam Houston and Eunice Woodall Cater in Temple. He was a graduate of Temple High School and attended Texas AM at Arlington. Sam married Joyce Holton on September 6, 1953 in Columbus, Georgia. He served in the Central Texas National Guard and retired with the rank of Major. Sam also worked for the United States Postal Service in Temple where he served as Postmaster before retiring in 1986 with 38 years of service. He was past President of the Optimist Club, past President of the Quarter Back Club of Temple High School and served as a volunteer for C.T.L.C. Sam was a member of Oak Park United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He also served as chairman on the Building and Finance Committees. He was loving know as Mr. 7th Street.

Sam is predeceased by his parents, Sam and Eunice Cater. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Cater of Temple; sons, Bruce Cater and wife, Olga of Temple and Joe Cater and wife, Monique of San Antonio; daughters, Kim Cater Joseph of Austin and Lynda Rieger and husband, Kenny of Cypress; sisters, Lynn Cater of St. Petersburg, FL and Ann Cater Ramsey of Houston; Grandchildren, Dan Glushko, Stacie Rieger, Jennifer Rieger-Greeaway, Morgan Rieger, David Joseph, Jr., Grant Joseph, Camille Cater and Celeste Cater; and great grandchild, Braden Greenaway.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple and services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at Oak Park United Methodist Church with Reverends Johnny Miller and Chris Mesa officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oak Park United Methodist Church Building Fund, 5505 S. 31st Street, Temple, TX 76502.
