Roy Byars, Sr.

Services for Roy Lee Byars, Sr., 84, of Temple will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 23 at St. James United Methodist Church in Temple. Burial will follow at Temple Garden of Memories.

Mr. Byars died Thursday, March 17, 2016, at his home in Temple.

Roy Lee Byars, Sr. was born on April 2, 1931 in Brookshire, Texas. Roy was the second child of six born to the late Ollie Byars, Sr. and the late Rosie Lee Byars. He was preceded in death by two of his brothers, Ollie, Jr. and T-Bone Byars.

In his early childhood years, Roy and his family moved to Temple, and here is where he went to school. Roy started cooking from the time he was 9 - 10 years old until the Blue Bonnet Café closed in 2009. He worked for the late Laverne Pitts and for George and Susan Luck for 40 years. He had several part-time janitorial jobs and he was a personal driver and companion for the late R.O Culp and his sister, the late Carolyn Culp Fletcher.

Roy married his life partner, Pauline Gidding Byars, May 14, 1954, and to this union they have three children. The late Glenn Dale Patterson, who Roy raised as his own since Glenn was three years old; LaSherl Yvette; and Roy Jr. (Bubba).

Roy Lee is survived by his beloved wife Pauline; daughter LaSherl Thomas and husband Michael; son Roy Jr. (Bubba) Byars and wife Lolitha, all of Temple; brothers Ben Byars and wife Loma of Temple; Robbie Byars and wife Pat of San Antonio; sisters Ann White and Mary Jo Byars (T-Bone's wife) of Temple; Audrey Patterson (Glenn Dale's wife) of Los Angeles, California; seven grandchildren, MarKeisha, Royce, Safronia, Crystal and Salena, all of Temple; Lisa and LaDwanna of Los Angeles, California; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins; and life-long friends John and Vivian Blocker.

Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. The family will receive guests from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions in honor of Roy Lee may be made to Pauline Byars.
