Roberta Gaye Camp, 81, of Temple, passed into Eternal Life on October 27, 2011 at home. Gaye was born to the late Jake and Sadie Poitevint, on Nov. 27, 1929 in Saragosa, TX. She grew up as a child during the years of the Great Depression and World War II. She was next to the youngest of nine children. As a child, she frequented the public library and started a love of books and knowledge that lasted throughout her life.
Gaye graduated from Pecos High School in 1947 as salutatorian. She was working as an executive secretary at Western Cotton Oil Company in Pecos when she met Joe Billy Camp, a civil engineer with the Soil Conservation Service. They married in 1949, and their early years in West Texas included residencies in Marfa, Van Horn, and Pecos. In midlife, Gaye experienced family moves from Pecos to San Marcos, and then to Temple in 1974. In Temple, Gaye fulfilled a lifetime dream of going to college. She graduated from Temple Junior College in 1979 and joined the administrative faculty at TJC where she worked until retiring in 1991.
She enjoyed traveling, and with her husband, she took numerous trips throughout the U.S. and made trips to Hawaii, the U.K., Canada, and the Netherlands. She was a lifelong supporter of wildlife and conservation initiatives.
Gaye was an active member of the First Christian Church in Pecos, San Marcos, and Temple. She was also a member of the Wildflower Antique Car Club, Temple Golden K Kiwanas, and SPJST. Among her many talents, she was an avid gardener, an accomplished cook, seamstress, and bookkeeper.
Gaye is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Joe Camp, and two children: Robert Camp of Friendswood, TX, and Shirley Vanderford of Flower Mound, TX. She also is survived by two sisters: Darlene Cantrell and Joyce Bingham, four grandchildren: Noelle Johnson, Bijan Camp, Tara Balliett, and Ryan Balliett, one greatgrandchild, and numerous nephews, nieces, greatnephews, and greatnieces.
Visitation will be held at the HarperTalasek Funeral Home from 4:00 6:00pm, Sunday, October 30, 2011. A Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 31, 2011, at the First Christian Church of Temple with Dr. Don Lynn officiating. A private family burial will follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery under the direction of HarperTalasek Funeral Home, Temple.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Gayes love for her church, the family is requesting that contributions be made to the First Christian Church of Temples music department or capital improvements, 300 North 5th Street, Temple, Texas 76501. The family expresses their grateful appreciation to Vista Care Hospice for the loving care rendered to Gaye and her family.
