Robert Holt

Robert Vernon Holt, 85, of Salado, died Saturday, May 3, 2008 in a Temple nursing facility.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 P.M. Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Salado with Dr. Leroy Kemp, Larry Holt, and Rev. Randy Carder officiating. A military burial will precede the memorial service at 2:30 P.M. in the Salado Cemetery.

Mr. Holt was born to Ollie and Nina Cauley Holt in Fort Worth on February 12, 1923. He graduated from Northside High School in Fort Worth in 1941. He was a 3-year letterman in baseball and football. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1942. After basic training in San Diego, California, he was assigned to the 4th Marine Division and fought in battles at Kwajalein Atoll, Roi Namur, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was discharged from the Marines in 1946 in Washington, D.C. After enrolling at Texas Christian University in the fall of 1946, he married Anna M. Matthews on July 19, 1947 in Fort Worth. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2007. Following graduation from Texas Christian University in 1950, he worked as a Petroleum Landman for Stanolind Oil Company, British-American Oil Company, and Lone Star Gas Enserch in Oklahoma City and Dallas. He concluded his landman's work with AA Energy in 1981 and retired to Salado, Texas in 1990. Vernon is remembered as a man who had a passion for coaching boys in baseball and football and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a man of integrity and faithfulness throughout his life and enjoyed humorous exchanges with friends and family members.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Holt of Salado; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Diane Holt of Mission Viejo, California, daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Mark Harrison of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Amy and husband, Dr. Tim Ramirez and great-granddaughter, Alex Ramirez; Wendy and husband, Tod Schellinger of Los Angeles, California, Andy Holt of Huntington Beach, California, Gray Harrison and wife, Maddie and great-grandson, Keegan Holt Harrison of Plano, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Nina Holt.
