Richard D. Vann, 74, of Temple died Friday, July 22nd, in a Temple hospital. Grave side services will be at 10:00 a.m. at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple, with Reverend Don Boesel officiating and music by Brad Flack. Mr. Vann was born March 8, 1937, in Somerville, Tennessee, to Richard and Gertrude Barnett Vann. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Humes High School. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp from 19581960.
On March 31, 1960, he married Kay Carroll of Temple.
He retired in 1989 after thirty years in the Communications field with Lucent Technologies.
He was an active member of the Temple Elks Lodge, where he received Volunteer of the Year in 2005, and in 20082009. In 20062007, the Grand Lodge Order of Elks conferred the Elk of the Year award upon him. He was also a member of the American Pool Association, where he won various awards and trophies over the years. He enjoyed his years of coaching Little League baseball.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his three sisters: Suzanne Zorn, Billie Jane Fierst, and Dorothy Brown, all of Memphis, Tennessee.
He is survived by his wife Kay Vann, and sons: Ricky Vann and wife Geraldine Vann of Bulverde, Bubba Vann and wife Sherri Vann of Moody, Ronnie Vann of Georgetown. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or charity of choice.
