Rachel Kirkpatrick 69 of Academy, TX passed away in a local nursing home Sunday December 6, 2009 after a short illness.
Rachel was born to Juan and Adela Gomez Longoria January 23, 1940 in Harlingen, Texas. She married Air Force 2Lt Robert W. Kirkpatrick in Harlingen, Texas 24 July, 1959; In fifty years of marriage she was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.
A wife of an active duty US Air Force officer, she was very supportive of her husbands career and a dedicated mother of two young children, while stationed in Newfoundland she learned bridge, becoming an avid bridge player accumulating Honors Points and continuing her interest in bridge for the rest of her life. She was a Brownie Scout Leader while taking care of the family and home during many days of SAC Alert and TAC Airlift TDY. Upon her husbands retirement in 1975 the family relocated to a farm in Eastern Geary Co. Ks, near Ft. Riley, Ks, she became very active in the local 4H program, helping the local 4H Club members in addition to her own children to attain state recognition in various areas of ribbon judging events. She also went back and earned her High School Diploma as a full time student at Junction City High School, class of 1980. She was involved in Mary Kay Cosmetics becoming a Mary Kay Director before moving to Academy, Texas in 1985. Upon arriving in Academy she became a Beauty Control Consultant, assisted in the management of the family rental properties, and being active in the youngest sons school activities. She was active in the local political scene by serving as an election clerk during elections. In addition to her affinity for playing bridge she also enjoyed being a member of the local bowling league. She became the Little River Academy City Secretary and Court Interpreter until forced to resign for health reasons.
Survivors are Husband Robert W. Kirkpatrick of the home, Daughter - Renee DeWyke and daughters Sara and Danielle of Columbus, NE, Sons Curtis L. Kirkpatrick and wife Vicky, and daughters Linzy and Stephanie of Wichita, KS, and Robert W. Kirkpatrick Jr. of Round Rock, TX; One brother Juan Johnny Longoria of Pearland TX, Two sisters Gloria Zamora of Harlingen TX and Frances McCannon of Litchfield Park, AZ.
Preceding her in death; Infant daughter Rhonda C. Kirkpatrick, Mother and Father - Juan and Adela Longoria of Harlingen TX; Brothers Amadeo Longoria of Harlingen TX, Alfredo Longoria of Houston TX, and Raul G. Longoria of San Benito TX; Sisters Oralia Longoria of Elsa TX and Celia Pesqueira of Rio Hondo TX.
In lieu of flowers the family requests Memorials in Rachel Kirkpatricks name be made to: Scott White Hospital, Office of Development, 2401 S 31st St, Temple, TX 76508, for research in your choice of Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Cancer Treatment.
A memorial service will be held at Harper Talasek Funeral Home, 500 W. Barton Ave, Temple, Texas at 2:00 P.M., 19 December 2009, 254 773-4564.
