Nelna Byrd

Major Nelna M. Byrd, USA Ret., 91, of Temple, died Friday, September 11, 2009 in a Temple hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Dresden Cemetery in Dresden, Texas.

Maj. Byrd was born to Henry and Kate Powell Arp in Corsicana, Texas on October 18, 1917. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a Major in the Nurse Corps, following 25 years of service. She also worked as a school nurse at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and nursed at the Santa Fe Hospital in Temple. She was a resident of Bell County for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Temple and D.A.V. Chapter 111.

Maj. Byrd is survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to First United Methodist Church, 102 North 2nd Street, Temple, Texas 76501.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
