Michael David Stary, 61, of Temple returned to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 28, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Services for Mr. Stary will be 9 a.m October 4 at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple with Drs. John and Karen Pelizzari officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Michael Stary was born November 30, 1951 in Fort Worth, Texas to Thomas Stary and Barbara Drew Stary. He grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force 1971 1976, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and serving as a Security Policeman. His last duty station was Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland. He married Cynthia Sodek in Belton on May 15, 2004.
In 1979, he received a Bachelors Degree in Social Services Social Rehabilitation from Sam Houston State University and, in 1990, received a Bachelors Degree in Religion from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. Mr. Stary had a very long career in the field of social work, including Juvenile Probation Officer in Mount Pleasant CaseworkerDormitory Director at the Brownwood State School House Parent at the Texas Baptist Childrens Home in Round Rock Adult Probation Officer for Williamson County Case Manager for the Round Rock Mental Health Center and the Kerr County Mental Health Center and Family Program Counselor at the Starlite Recovery Center in Center Point. Mr. Stary was a Social Service Worker for the Central Counties MHMR in Temple for many years prior to his retirement.
Mr. Stary was the former pastor of Kerrville Church of the Nazarene and volunteered in the prison ministries in Gatesville for several years. He was a member of Agape Christian Center in Belton.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Stary, and by a brother, Joe Stary. He is survived by his father, Thomas his wife, Cynthia sons Tim Stary and wife Natalie of Salado, and Brian Riggan and wife Brooke of Temple three daughters, Kim Stary of St. Petersburg, Florida, Amber Uecker and husband Lee of Fond du Lac, WI, and Heather Mikulas and husband Chad of Temple one brother, Elton Stary and wife Katie of Canyon and six grandchildren, HannahLee, Adalyn, Gracelyn, Emma, Cole, and Camryn.
Visitation will be 68 p.m. Thursday, October 3 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agape Christian Center Prison Ministries.
