Services for Melvin Pitts, 79, of Temple will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 10 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with Pastor Ron Milne officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Durango, Texas.
Mr. Pitts passed away on September 7, 2016, at a local care facility.
Melvin Pitts was born February 3, 1937 in Durango, Texas to William and Willie (Tye) Pitts. Melvin loved sports and gave so much of his time coaching others. In his spare time, you could always find him alongside his wife, Jean Pitts, at any number of local sporting events. Melvin was a US Navy veteran, and served aboard the U.S.S. Princeton from 1956 - 1960. He worked for Wilson Art for over 30 years and had over 50 patents registered in his name.
Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Melinda Pitts, of Houston, in 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jean; a son, Deric Pitts, of Temple; two grandchildren, Reagan and Ryan Pitts, both of Temple; and three brothers, William Joe Pitts, of Temple, David Pitts, of Troy, and Donald Pitts, of Belfalls.
Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 9 at the funeral home.
