Mary H. Ortega

Mary Harriet “Granny” Munoz Ortega, 90 yrs old of Temple, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Our Hospice House in Temple. Services will be held at 1 pm on Monday, October 21, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple with Bishop Daniel Garcia officiating (CA). Burial will follow in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Mary was born on April 9, 1934, to Ignacio Munoz and Anita San Miguel as Maria Enriqueta Munoz in Sharp, Texas. She was a 1953 graduate of Sharp High School. She married Thomas Zamora Ortega on October 17, 1954. She was a long-time resident of Temple, after moving from Rockdale in 1967. She was employed by Temple ISD for 35 years as both a Teacher Aide and Librarian Aide. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, was an avid seamstress, and was a huge fan of the Temple Wildcats where she attended every football game that she could. She was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was involved with St. Mary's Altar Society.

Mary is preceded in death by her loving husband; parents; great granddaughter, Mackenzie Ortega; brothers, Ernest, Domingo, Lee, Arthur, and Raymond; and sisters, Isidora, Cuca, MaryAnn, Sarah, and Delores.

Mary is survived by her son, Robert Ortega (Becky) of Arlington; daughters, Rita Motl (Eugene) of Temple, Cynthia Baylor (Jeffrey) of Troy, and Linda Ortega-Temeyosa of Temple; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister, Annie Rojas of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Our Hospice House and the team of hospice nurses who cared for our mother, Mary Harriet Munoz Ortega.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate your donations to one of the following entities: Our Hospice House, St. Mary's School, or St. Mary's Chapel of Incarnation.

A time of visitation will be held from 3 - 5 pm with a Holy Rosary recited at 4:30 pm Sunday, October 20, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple. A celebration of life and bereavement meal will follow the visitation on Sunday in the Ava Maria building at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
