Mary Louise Slover Draughon, 91, of Temple, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008 in a Belton nursing center.

Private graveside services were held at 4:00 P.M. Friday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple with Rev. Robert Mattson and Rev. Brent Eaton officiating.

Mrs. Draughon was born to Thomas Jackson Slover and Meda Hobbs Slover in Crafton, TX. on April 24, 1917. She was raised in Paducah, TX. In 1937 she graduated from Texas School for the Deaf in Austin. She married N.S. Draughon, Jr. in Austin on June 7, 1941, and had lived in Temple since that time. She was employed as a sign language instructor for Temple Independent School District from 1975 until 1983. She also worked with the Bell County Rehab Center. Mrs. Draughon was a talented artist, and designed the logo for the Cultural Activities Center. She was a charter member of the League of Contemporary Arts. She held membership in the Texas Deaf-Blind Association, Baptist Conference of the Deaf, Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf, Southern Baptist Convention of the Deaf, National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, and the Temple Porcelain Art Guild. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Temple, and a former member of First Baptist Church of Temple, where she was the Executive Director of the Girls Auxiliary. She was also a former member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco, where she taught Sunday School for the deaf for 25 years. Mrs. Draughon was the recipient of the Most Optimis-tic Person in Temple award from the Temple Optimist Club in 1960.

Mrs. Draughon was preceded in death by her husband on October 3, 1998.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Mrs. H. Paul Mansky of Mansfield, TX. and Saphira D. Rain of Raytown, MO.; grandson, Paul H. Mansky of San Francisco, CA; granddaughters, Jennifer Mansky of Purdys, NY and Lynda Cleveland of Blue Springs, MO; five great grandchildren; and six nieces.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to VistaCare Hospice and Park Place Manor Nursing Center for the loving care given to Mrs. Draughon. And a special thanks to Dr. J. R. Bowling, Dr. Edna Bridges and Jonathan Coppin.
