She met the love of her life, Edward Martin Doerfler, in Austin Texas while working at an ice cream parlor on Congress Avenue. They were married on April 5, 1941 for 63 years. They lived in Manor, Thrall and eventually settled in Temple, due to Edwards teaching and coaching jobs. They had three children, Karen, Debby and Jimmy.
Mary loved children and was employed as a Temple Youth Director and as a teacher at St. Marys Catholic School for many years. She was hired at St. Lukes Catholic Church as the first Religious Education Coordinator and Kindergarten Administrator for the preKKindergarten program. She was very active in the Catholic Church in numerous capacities, but eventually retired to be at home with Edward and her cat KiKi.
She loved flowers and gardening and was very proud of her yard that was filled with beautiful blooming plants, bushes and gorgeous oak trees. Mary loved to play dominoes and wahoo with her family. She was a faithful fan of Texas Rangers baseball and UT football. She loved to fish and enjoyed catching crappie and white bass. She was a great cook but never used a written recipe...just a dash here and a taste there. She loved the holidays and would decorate her house with great enthusiasm. She was very thoughtful and remembered family birthdays and anniversaries with a card.
