Services for Lucille Mattie Smith, 98, of Temple, will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 14, at Memorial Baptist Church in Temple with Corey Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith went home to be with the Lord and many loved ones on Tuesday, November 8, just ten days before her 99th birthday, at a local care facility. Up to that point, she continued living independently in her home and driving herself on short trips around town.
Lucille Mattie Smith was born November 18, 1917 in Grady, New Mexico (now known as Clovis, New Mexico) to Joseph A. Newsom and Mattie Renick Newsom. Living through the Great Depression, she learned how to live frugally and enjoy the simple things in life.
Lucille married William Bennett Smith in Bell County, Texas on June 20, 1937 and remained in Temple where they raised their family. She was a homemaker while "W.B." worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. She enjoyed china painting, cooking for her family, bird-watching, and serving as a den mother for her sons' Boy Scout troop. She loved fishing and enjoyed watching the wildlife from the back porch of her home for many years. She was a faithful member at Memorial Baptist Church in Temple for 78 years, where she taught Sunday school and served on various committees. Though she was unable to attend services for the past few years, she greatly enjoyed the visits and meals from her church family.
