Leo S. VanWie, 83, of Temple went to be with his Lord on April 14, 2012 at his home. A Funeral Service will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Oak Park United Methodist Church, Temple, TX with Rev. Johnny Miller officiating. Services are under the direction of HarperTalasek Funeral Home, Temple, TX.
Leo was born the son of the late Charles and Louise VanWie in Delhi, NY. After graduating from Delaware Academy in 1947, he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and served for seven years, including a tour of duty in Korea. After resigning from the service, he was a civilian instructor at Scott AFB, IL. He joined IBM in 1956, and retired in 1984 after 29 years of service. He then became a partner in the Parkview Hotel in Owego, NY until 1992 when he relocated to the Temple area.
He married Emily Battoe of Lebanon, IL in 1951. During their marriage they were blessed with five children. Emily went to be with her Lord in 1989.
Leo married Ann Daniels of Temple, TX, in 1993. They have been members of the Oak Park United Methodist Church of Temple, TX for 19 years, where Leo enjoyed serving, by running the recycling program, which generated money for the general ministry fund and also, planting and caring for various flowers in the church garden.
He was also a life time member of the American Legion and VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Emily, infant son, Sheldon brothers, Raymond and Harold VanWie sister, Dorothy Gregory and great grandson Max Pousseur.
Leo is survived by his wife Ann Daniels VanWie of Temple, TX 4 daughters, Diane Madison and husband Dale of NY Sharon Rajchel of NY Virginia Sulick and husband Tom of CA Lynne Peterson and husband Brian of CA 2 sisters Joyce Brush of NY Debra Rabeler and husband Frederick of NC brother Charles VanWie and wife Gladys of NY 5 grandchildren, Lisa Polhamus, Tracy Pousser, Jacquelyn Rajchel, James Hodgson, Michael Peterson, 2 great grandchildren, Ella Pousseur, Matthew Polhamus, several nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.
Memorials may be made to Oak Park United Methodist Church, Building Fund, or the American Cancer Society.
