Lavonia Stuart

Graveside services for Lavonia "Shep" Shepperd Stuart, 91, of Temple, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Bellwood Memorial Cemetery in Temple with Tom Henderson officiating.

Mrs. Stuart passed away Friday, April 14, in Corsicana, Texas.

Lavonia Shepperd Stuart was born June 5, 1925 in Temple, Texas to William Watson Shepperd and Cynthia Virginia Garmony Shepperd. Lavonia was determined and hard working and began working for her Dad at 13. She graduated from Temple High School in 1941 at the age of 16. She wanted to be an attorney and attended Baylor University for one year, but was too young for college at 16. She married Charles William Stuart on September 7, 1946, and they went on to have two children, David and Rebecca. Bill attended the University of Texas and so began Shep's love of the great Texas Longhorns. She was often found wearing her favorite burnt orange. She worked in banking, but spent much time doing things for others making baby blankets, baby caps and just about anything for her many friends. She and Bill traveled from the East to West Coast in their motor home and made many wonderful friends and memories. Bill would always say she was "a tough old bird". She was. She loved her family, friends and community with that same strength and dedication. She had a strong faith and loved lighthouses, and believed that He was the great lighthouse. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Temple.

Mrs. Stuart was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, James A. Shepperd and Claude Shepperd.

Survivors include her son, C. David Stuart and wife Nita; daughter, Rebecca Gandy and husband Nick; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two nieces. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.
