Kenneth E. Kimes, 83 of Temple, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 5, 2023. Service for interment will be at 11 am Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Kenneth was born on April 3, 1940, to Charles E. and Mary J. Kimes, who predeceased him. Raised on a farm outside Kerens, Texas, Ken loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He graduated from Kerens High School in 1958, and attended Trinity University, Navarro College, and Stephen F. Austin State University. He was drafted into the Army in 1962, completed Basic Training at Ft. Smith, AR, and was selected for Officer Training at Ft. Benning, GA. After being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, his military training continued at Ft. Rucker, AL flight school, where he received his wings as an Army aviator. Ken had an extensive Army career, flew combat missions in Vietnam and commanded helicopter aviation units in the United States, and Germany. During his career he completed his college education through Operation Boot Strap and graduated from several military schools including the US Army Command and General Staff College, Air War College, and Army Language School. He retired from active duty in 1993 with the rank of Colonel. Upon his retirement, Ken and his wife, Sylvia purchased land outside Corsicana, TX where the two of them built a log home, and he became a rancher, mostly as a hobby. In 2005, they moved to Temple, TX where they resided when he passed away after an extended illness.
Survivors include wife Sylvia, brother Gene Kimes and his wife Kathie, and sister-in-law Margaret Warren.
