Mass of Christian Burial for Juanita Rodriquez Castillo, 88 of Temple, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Mrs. Castillo passed from this life peacefully on Saturday, February 18, at local hospital while surrounded by her loving family.
Juanita was born October 11, 1928 in Elm Mott, Texas to Juan and Paula Rodriquez. She lived all of her life in central Texas and most of that time in Temple. She was a devoted woman of faith and was a long time parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She served her church in many ways throughout the years; she's most fondly remembered for leading the catechism classes and her role in the church's women's group "The Guadalupanas" for many years.
Juanita was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed all sports, especially basketball, baseball, and most of all football. Her favorite team was the Oklahoma University Sooners and she cheered for them fervently, especially during the Red River Shootout versus their arch rival the University of Texas Longhorns. Juanita knew everything there was to know about football, college and pro. She knew the rules backwards and forwards and would let the officiating crew know it if there was a bad call, regardless if they could hear her or not. She also knew every team's quarterback and if they were any good or not. Juanita was a bingo queen and played as much as she possibly could. She knew when and where bingo was being played in Temple, Belton, Killeen and everywhere else in between. Mrs. Castillo had the ability to play many cards at a time and if you went with her she'd play your cards too if you weren't paying enough attention.
No matter if it was playing bingo or watching football, Juanita enjoyed it more if she was with her family. Family was one of the most important things in life for Mrs. Castillo. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Castillo was preceded in death by her parents.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory are her daughters, Stella Lerma and husband Robert, Herlinda McGahan, Hope Murany and husband Jon, Mary Valverde, Bitsy and Heidi Castillo, Paula Castillo and husband Sidro, Lily Rivera and husband Rodney, Phyllis Muro and husband Mike, and Maggie Hilton; sons, Ruben Castillo, Larry Castillo and wife Alma, Ricky Castillo and wife Cecila, Ralph Castillo and Martha Duarte, Ronnie Castillo and wife Patsy, and Paulino "Boy" Castillo. She also leaves behind 5 generations of grandchildren.
There will be a time of visitation on Monday, February 20, from 6-8 p.m. with Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Temple, 500 W. Barton Ave.
Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Temple is in charge of arrangements.
