Temple, TX. - Joseph Richard Mitchell, age 71, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.
Joseph Mitchell grew up in the Mississippi Delta as the only son of five children born to Wiley and Evelyn Mitchell on August 19, 1946. Joe is survived by his sisters Frances Barnett, Alice Bridges, and Christine Frisbee, as well as nieces, nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents Wiley and Evelyn Mitchell and his sister Rosemary Mitchell Hearn.
Serving his country was Joe's calling in life. Joe was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals including a Bronze Star Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, two Silver Stars, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with the Palm Unit. He served in the Army with distinction for 23 years. His service included three tours in Vietnam, serving as Dragon Gunner in the Cavalry division and an equipment mechanic.
After retiring from the Army, Joe worked for many years as a welder in Louisville, Kentucky welding boxcars. His workmanship in welding and carpentry was of excellent quality but he had the unique capability of doing many things well. He also loved to garden and took pride in the beautiful gardens he created. With a heart bigger than Texas, Joe had a passion for helping people. The kindness and generosity of his heart was bestowed freely to those in need.
Joe was quintessentially American and fiercely loved and served his country. He will be laid to rest with full military honors in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas on Friday, November 3, 2017.
