Deacon Jose Cruz Perez, 65, of Temple died Wednesday at a local hospital. Visitation will be Sunday 57 pm with the Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 1st at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Reverend Tom Chamberlain officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Deacon Cruz was born September 14, 1944 in Pendleton. He attended Troy schools and played football as a Troy Trojan. He married Lucia Lucy Barbosa in April 1965 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He retired from Mobil Chemical after 25 years of service and retired from Troy I.S.D. after working there for 7 years . He was a devoted and active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where he served as deacon. He and his wife were instrumental in fundraising events at the church, was Euchrist Minister, headed the RCIA class and worked in the religious store. He was director of Prolife in Temple and other church activities. He graduated from Mary HardinBaylor with a bachelor of science degree in business.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Guadalupe Perez and his adoptive mother, Aurora Guzman. He is survived by his wife, Lucy of Temple daughters, Odilia Sanchez, Frances Garcia and Maria Rios all of Temple and grandchildren, Michael Sustaita, Javier Sustaita, Daniella Sanchez, John Paul Sanchez, Kristie Sanchez, Angelina Sanchez, Nicolas SanchezJeremy Garcia, Erica Garcia, Stephen Rios, Ashely Rios, Brittany Perez, and Samuel Carlysle.
