Johnnie Bernhard, age 91 of Temple, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9 at Scott and White Hospital.
Johnnie was born on February 8, 1918 to Minor Earl and Mae Bell Bartlett. Her parents were living in a tent just outside Mason, Texas where her father was building a bridge. When Johnnies mothers labor began, the couple went into Mason for delivery. As there was no hospital in Mason, they went to a boarding house where Johnnie was born. The woman who owned the boarding house had a 4 year old grandson visiting her on this occasion. Coincidentally, that grandson was Milton Barney Bernhard, whom Johnnie married 19 years later.
Johnnie grew up in San Antonio, graduating from Harlandale High School. She married Milton Bernhard on April 30, 1937. They lived in San Antonio most of their marriage, eventually moving to Temple in 1977 to be closer to one of their grandchildren. Johnnie was a homemaker and worked for Dyers Department Store and Bell County, retiring at the age of 77. She was active with the Temple Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters; Doris Benson and Effie Elliott, and brother Minor Earl Bartlett, Jr.
She is survived by daughter Johnnie Mae Oliver and husband Michael of Carlsbad, New Mexico; daughter Donna OKelley Gibson and husband Bill of Harker Heights, granddaughter Robyn Filzen and husband Tim of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandson Wallace OKelley and wife April of Austin, TX, great granddaughters Katie and Sarah Filzen of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She will be missed by her family, her dear friends, and loving neighbors. Memorials may be made to the Glenda Tanner Vasicek Cancer Center at Scott and White.
