John Michael Flores, 65, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
John was born on April 9, 1959, to Joel and Irene Silva Flores in Temple, Texas. He grew up in a big family surrounded by lots of love. The Flores house on Sixth Street across from Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church was always filled with laughter, love, and all kinds of people.
John inherited a strong work ethic from his parents. When he was in high school, he worked at Lavendusky Grocery Store, where he met Carrie Flores, the love of his life. After graduating from Temple High School in 1978, he put in years working for the railroad before trading hot days in the sun for hot days in the barbecue pit. John worked alongside his father and brother for years running Kerley’s BBQ. There, he made countless briskets and chopped beef sandwiches (his daughters’ favorite). After closing up at Kerley’s he would head over to the Temple Daily Telegram where he worked night shift until his retirement. He found time to sleep where and when you’d least expect.
Mickey, as almost everyone called him, loved making people laugh. He loved a good yard project, animals of all kinds, going for long drives in his truck, and watching old westerns. Most of all he loved playing with his grandchildren for hours on end; they were his pride and joy. John was a completely selfless man and would do anything for his family and friends. If you needed a hand, John would be there (sometimes before you even asked).
John is preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Irene Silva Flores.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his children: Kaci Allen and husband Tad, Kandee Clark and husband Travis, Eric Ellis, Ethan Ellis, and Evan Ellis; grandchildren: Rosemary Allen, Rex Allen, Raleigh Allen, Ruby Allen, Heath Clark, and Prairie Clark of Temple; brothers and sisters: Robert Flores and Sylvia Bustos of Belton, George Flores, Joanna Staton, and Fernando Flores of Temple; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his many, many friends.
A time of visitation will be held Monday, March 3, 2025, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple from 6-8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church followed by fellowship at the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s name to Temple Education Foundation, 401 Santa Fe Way, Temple, TX 76501.
