Joel Flores, age 93 of Temple, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at his home, surrounded by family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Temple. Burial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple.
Joel was born on July 21, 1927 to Jose and Magdelena Luna Flores in Bastrop, Texas. He married Irene Silva on November 26, 1947. Joel loved spending time with his family, playing pool, fishing, playing cards and dominos, traveling to San Antonio and heading to the casinos in his free time. He devoted his life to God and his family. He was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He began his journey as a butcher while working at Hawkins Grocery in Temple. He was soon well known for his BBQ and butcher skills while working at Lavendusky Grocery Store. When he began working at Kerley’s BBQ, many people enjoyed lining up for his delicious BBQ, chili, stew, menudo and hot sausage. He was known for his hard work and was passionate about every task he started. He always put his family first and enjoyed living the simple life. Joel was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Temple.
Joel is preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Magdelena Luna Flores; his loving wife, Irene Silva Flores; brother, Marcello Flores; brother, Moses Flores; brother, Jesus Flores; brother, Lee Flores; sister, Refugia Lara; and sister, Rebecca Lopez.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his brother, Joe Flores; brother, Daniel Flores; sister, Rosa Padilla; sister, Rubina Henao; sister, Norma Tinnen; children, Robert Flores and Sylvia Bustos of Belton, George Flores, John Flores, Joanna Staton and Fernando Flores of Temple; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A time of visitation will be held from 5-7 pm with a rosary recited at 6 pm Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.
