Joe Wayne White, age 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital.
Joe was born on May 21, 1939, in Jacksonville, Texas, to Herman Lavan White and Lois Marie Epperson. He attended Dixie School and Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, before his family moved to Temple. He is a graduate of Temple High School, Class of 1957, and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in History and English in 1961.
He married the former Sandra Ann Tomlin on June 4, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in Temple. He served his country in the U. S. Army Security Agency, stationed in Rothwesten, Germany, from 1961 to 1964. He worked for the Aetna Casualty and Surety in Houston and in Hartford, CT, and owned and operated the J. W. White Insurance Agency in Spring Texas.
He was a long-time member of the Woodlands Rotary serving as Sergeant at Arms and a member of Temple Rotary South serving as Treasurer. He was very involved in Boy Scouts of America, starting as a Tenderfoot Scout in Tyler, Texas, and serving as Scoutmaster in the North Star District of Rothwesten, Germany and Cubmaster and Scoutmaster in the Sam Houston Area Council in Spring, Texas. One of the highlights of his service was serving as an adult leader for an Explorer outing with son David to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Temple for many years serving as Lector, Acolyte and Chalice Bearer. He is now a member of First Methodist Church, the Saints and Sinners Sunday School Class and the Men's Prayer Breakfast Group, all very near and dear to his heart. He loved nothing better than reading a good book or his Bible or Prayer Book on his front porch. He was very outgoing and was known for answering the question "How are you" with "Never Better". People also remember his plaid pants and hats.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary L. White. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, a sister, Judy Wisener of Temple, son, David Allan White of Spicewood, Texas; granddaughter, Kaylee Nicole White of Houston, Texas, grandsons, Ricky Rios and Christopher Rios of Austin.
A memorial service will be held at First Methodist Church of Temple on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held before the service at 10:00 am in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Methodist Church of Temple.
