Jim Raymond Shumate, Jr. J.R. was born January 25, 1930 near Wellington, Texas to Raymond, Sr. and Eunice Shumate. He went to be with the Lord on March 18, 2012 at his home in Temple, Texas. His family moved to the Melrose, N.M. area when he was approximately 2 years old. He graduated from school at Melrose where he was very active in Future Farmers of America FFA. He truly loved farming and seeing things grow.
He married Waunell Laney on July 18, 1948 at her parents home northwest of Melrose. To this union 3 children were born Joel Ray, Ricki Eric deceased, and Barbara Karen Bomar. He had 4 sisters Helen Gonser deceased, Jane Hall, Shirley Williams and Carol Pierce. He had 4 grandsons Seth Sy Martin, Ryan Shumate and Mickey Miller. He also had 8 great grandchildren Halle, Caiden and Bryden Martin, Reed, Rylan, Kaige and Kas Martin and Carson Shumate.
He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Eunice, his sister Helen and his son Ricki. He is survived by his wife Waunell, his son Joel Wilna of Temple, Texas, his daughter Barbara Bomar of Dallas, Texas, his sisters Jane Hall of Belen, N.M., Shirley Williams Jerry of Cypress, C.A. and Carol Pierce of Clovis, N.M.
J.R. became a Christian at 11 years of age during a revival meeting in the First Baptist Church in Melrose. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1966 in the FBC of Clovis and served as Chairman of Deacons in three churches. He taught junior boys, first grade and preschool children in his younger years and then taught adults for many years. He was involved in the Good News Club at MeredithDunbar Elementary in Temple for the past couple of years. He helped to start and served as Bus Ministry Director and Childrens Church Pastor for a number of years. He was a farmer in eastern New Mexico from 19471974 where he was appointed to the Farmers Home Administration Board in 1962 and served for 3 years. After 26 years, he sold his farm and dedicated the remainder of his life to serving the Lord. He traveled overseas 12 times as a volunteer in Partnership Missions and building projects, he served on the board of World Evangelism Foundation for a number of years he joined Volunteer Mission Corps through the Home Mission Board, serving in the FBC of Deer Park, Washington from November 1990 May 1991. While in Washington he taught Continuing Witness Training. He served with Bill Glass Prison Ministries where he was a Bible Study Leader and a counselor in the city wide meetings and he worked building 2 churches with Texas Retired Builders. In each church where he was a member, he served in many capacities and on many committees. J.R. was currently a member of Memorial Baptist Church where he was on the finance committee, house and grounds committee and was the Deacon body vicechairman.
In the last several years he had taken up a new way to minister to people and their needs. He made a number of lecterns for local churches he also made several different puzzles which he gave to law enforcement personnel, doctors and many others. In the last few years he had started to make small wooden tops which were a big hit with lots of the adult kids. His greatest delight was his little wooden cars which he gave to churches, hospitals, orphanages, Toys for Tots, Ronald McDonald House and any kid that he might see in a restaurant. He made over 30,000 cars with more than 5,000 going to put a smile on the faces of kids in many thirdworld countries in Africa, Central and South America.
J.R. loved missions and it is the familys request that in lieu of flowers you send donations in his memory to the missions fund at Memorial Baptist Church, 6161 South 5th Street, Temple, Texas 76502.
A CelebrationMemorial service, will follow a private family burial, at 2:00pm, Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Memorial Baptist Church, Temple, TX, under the direction of HarperTalasek Funeral Home, Temple. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
