Private services for Hurshell Hatley, 90, of Temple, Texas will be held at a late date.
God called Hurshell Hatley to his heavenly home on April 19, 2015.
Hurshell was born near San Angelo on December 29, 1924. He wore many hats in his lifetime. He worked at Sperry Remington for twenty years and served as a Reserve Police Officer nearly fifteen years without pay because he wanted to serve and give back to his country. Hurshell had many scary times while working as an officer in Dallas. He was on duty when President Kennedy was shot. He was the one to receive Oswald after he was caught and taken to jail, but somehow Jack Ruby shot him. The Lord led him to Paris, Texas to build the "Red River Valley Bible Camp" in 1976 where he lived on the grounds as manager for six years. He worked very hard to make the camp a wonderful place to worship. Later he built a home in Paris and lived there for twenty-six years. Hurshell also did leather tooling and made many belts for the children at the Scottish Rite Hospital with their names on them. He loved the Lord first of all, then his wife, Shirley Abney of sixty-four years; three children, Marsha Farney, Terri Boettigheimer, Gary Hatley; son-in-law, Bryan Farney; grandchildren; and great- grandchildren. Hurshell loved to till God's grounds and see things grow. He always gave away the first fruits of his garden.
Hurshell is leaving his family to always love and mourn for the one they loved most of all. A wonderful Daddy, a great husband, and a man who loved his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jo Hatley, and one sister, Una Bear of Houston.
