H.L. Mayes

November 3, 1941 — October 3, 2015

Services for H.L "Johnny" Mayes, 73, of Belton will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with John Mayes officiating. Burial will follow at Reeds Lake Cemetery in Little River Academy, TX.
Mr. Mayes passed away on October 3rd at his residence.
Mr. Mayes was born November 3, 1941, to Henry Lee Mayes and Mattie Bleeker Mayes in Holland, Texas. He was a proud father to his sons and loved his family dearly. Johnny loved bowling and collecting vintage coins. He served his country while stationed in Germany. Johnny married four times...once to Judy Rushing, Ruthie Ames, Bee, Mary, and a dear friend and companion Patsy Proctor. He loved Hank Williams, Charlie Pride, and knew ZZ Top while working as the manager of the Utotem Store on Alabama street in Houston before they became famous. Johnny adopted a child that was not his and could sharpen a knife to that of a razor like nobody's business. He read many novels and could recite the alphabet in German. Johnny had a big heart and was generous to all he knew. He was a man....with the flaws and regrets of any other man on this earth but a man you could take at his word. He said often, "Anything that I say you can take to the bank."
His memories will be cherished by his five sons; Billy Mayes, John Mayes and Karen, Chris Mayes, Gabriel Rodriguez and Adrienne, Steve Mayes and Ronnica Ridgeway. Patsy's children Dayna, Jim, Chad, and Amber Proctor; seven brothers; Weldon Easley and Loraine, Danny Mayes, Mike Mayes, Robert Mayes, Hank Mayes, Thomas Mayes, Joe Mayes; three sisters; Linda Morgan, Brenda Mayes-Whitcomb, Laurie Yeager along with thirteen grandchildren - Russell Mayes, Billy and Glynn Cowart, Jacob Payne, Hunter and Alli Mayes, Carli Mayes, Anthony, Emilio, Gabriel, and Mateo Rodriguez, Evan and Michael Mayes and several great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by both his parents; "Pops" Loren Swett; and one brother, Wayne Mayes.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
