Helen Schwalm

February 3, 1920 — November 1, 2016

Graveside services for Helen Roxy Schwalm, 96, of Temple will be at noon, Monday, November 7, at Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery in Killeen.

Mrs. Schwalm passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 1, 2016.

Helen was born on February 3, 1920 in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Carson Hatfield and Mary Gilliam Hatfield. Helen obtained a Bachelor's degree in Education from East Central College in Ada, Oklahoma. She worked as a teacher for a few years until she joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II and attained the rank of Sergeant. She married Arthur Earl Schwalm, the love of her life, on January 5, 1947. She then worked for the Department of the Navy and retired in 1972.

Helen was best known for her spunky personality and dry sense of humor. She was a very successful and assertive woman in life, who grew to be one of the kindest and sweetest souls. She always had a funny retort during conversations and enjoyed making others smile. She will be loved and missed by many.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Dana Wood and son-in-law William of Temple; her granddaughter Whitney Onyango and her husband David of Temple; and her grandson Weston Wood, his wife Tara, and their daughters Braelyn Rae and Cadence Grace of Rhome, Texas.

Visitation will be held at 5-7 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2016, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

The family would like to express special thanks to all of those who went above and beyond when caring for Helen during her time living at William R. Courtney Texas State Veteran's Home.
