Helen Marie (Mazan) Hupe was born on March 1, 1932 to Ignatius Mazan and Martha (Kowalski) Mazan in Brenham, Texas. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and Brenham High School from which she graduated in 1949. She continued her studies at Blinn College taking business and secretarial courses. One of her first jobs was as an Executive Secretary at a well-known shipping company in Houston. She met Elroy Henry Hupe while she was working at a local shop when he came in to repair a pinball machine. She and Elroy were married October 1, 1954 in Houston, Texas. Houston is where they started their family of three children and formed lifelong friendships with close neighbors. In 1968, they bought land and built a home on the outskirts of East Bernard, Texas and became beloved friends and neighbors in the rural community. Helen loved her home there. She and Elroy later moved to Temple, Texas in 2009 to be close to their grandchildren and again found a place to call home.
Helen had a wide variety of talents and interests. She loved music of all genres and had a beautiful singing voice. She sang in church choirs and performed solos. She introduced the love of music to her children, as she played a variety of songs; from Opera to Country; and sang her favorites while in the kitchen. She was an excellent seamstress. She especially enjoyed making adorable outfits for her grandchildren. She had an extraordinary vocabulary and recollection of people, history, and events. She was the go-to person for filling in details of historical events or completing the Sunday crossword puzzle. She loved poetry and art. She also had a mischievous sense of humor. Above all, she was a truly good person who loved her family dearly and wanted them all to know God’s love.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elroy Hupe.
Survivors include a son, Edward Anthony Hupe; two daughters, Carmel Jean Hupe, and Mary Kylberg and husband Roger; three grandchildren, Eric Kylberg, Kristen Geesaman and husband Matthew, and Lauren Kylberg; and two great grandchildren, Otto Geesaman and Calvin Geesaman.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Church, their families and friends, and all who have extended support and kindness during this time.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Catholic Relief Services or MaryKnoll Missionaries.
Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple, Texas is in charge of the arrangements.
