Gwendolyn Turknett

November 13, 1918 — December 7, 2010

Gwendolyn Turknett passed quietly into the arms of the Lord on December 7th, 2010. She was 92 years old. Gwen was born in Troy, Texas to Fred Benson and Stella Gwyn Benson. Her mother died when Gwen was very young and she was raised by her aunt Iola Wade and uncle Marcus Wade of Temple, Texas. She was a graduate of Temple High School and attended Temple Junior College. Gwendolyn married Kyle Lavoy Turknett on the 21st of December, 1940. They lived in many places in the United States and Europe while her husband was in military service. They moved to Temple to live permanently in 1958.
Gwen was a member of the 1st Baptist Church and a life time member of the Social Order of the Eastern Star, Vashti chapter 32. She and her husband served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron of the Social Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 153. She also served as President of the Social Order of the Beauceants 155.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Kyle her parents Fred and Stella Benson her foster parents Iola and Marcus Wade a grandson Marcus Benjamin Crabbe four brothers Hugh Benson, Walter Benson, Roy Benson, and Burnell Benson two sisters Louise Morris and Rena Mae Hughes. She is survived by a daughter Gwynne Kyleen Crabbe and her soninlaw Joel Crabbe a son Thomas Marcus Turknett and her daughterinlaw Sherlynn four grandchildren Kyla Albers, Carrie Draher, Kyle Turknett, and Genella Bogausch six great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren her precious cousin Francis Kotrla.
The list of lives she touched so deeply, who call her Nanny, who love her, whom she loved so dearly extends far beyond those named here. Nanny, we know love, we love well because we were so well loved by you. We take from here forward your light and lessons learned about all things good. Nannys light shines still upon us, grows within us. We hold it dearly share it freely.
Visitation will be at the HarperTalasek Funeral Home on Friday, December 10th during the hours of 127 pm and on Saturday, December 11th from 1012 am. A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery Floca Pavilion at 1 pm, the Reverend Doug Young will preside. In lieu of flowers send memorials to the 1st Baptist Church, 204 W. Calhoun St. Temple, Texas 76501 or a chosen charity.
