GEORGIA MAE JODY CORTESE MAPES
Georgia Mae Jody Cortese Mapes, 89, of Temple, died Friday, September 24, 2010 in a Temple hospital.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, Setember 29, 2010 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Temple with Rev. Ranjan Cletus and Deacon Jerry Klement officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple with visitation from 5:30 P.M. until the time of the rosary.
Mrs. Mapes was born to Phillip George Cortese and Catherine Bellelo Cortese in Temple on June 2, 1921. She was a resident of Temple most of her life, and had also lived in Houston and San Angelo. She graduated from Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Waco in 1945, and prior to her retirement, was employed as a Registered Nurse with the Veterans Administration hospitals in Temple and Marlin for several years. She had also served a brief period of time in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, being honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant. She enjoyed the distinction of serving as a surgical nurse with the renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, in Houston. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Temple.
Survivors include three brothers, Frank Cortese and Salvadore Cortese, both of San Angelo, and Vince Cortese of Little River three sisters, Nancy Marie Miller, Janie Harding, and Jean Dell Cortese, all of Temple and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Mapes and a sister, Ann Fuentes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to St. Marys Catholic Church, 1018 South 7th Street, Temple, Texas 76504.
