Saturday, October 6, 2018, George Davis Gideon, beloved son, husband, father and Pappaw slipped the bonds of earth. He was born on November 7, 1930 to George and Una Gideon of Sulphur Springs, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth; a sister, Jo Rea; and the love of his life for 62 years, Susie.
He grew up in Sulphur Springs and attended Texas A&M as a member of the Corp of Cadets. In order to join the Air Force and follow his dream of becoming a pilot, he finished his degree at East Texas State in Commerce as a member of the Air Force ROTC. He married Sue Stapp on June 29, 1952. His early service in the Air Force took his family to Florida, California, Arizona and him to South Korea. When his Dad became ill with cancer in the early 1960's, he moved his family back to Texas, but he continued to fly and serve in the Air Force Reserves until 1990, retiring as a Lt. Col.
In Temple, Texas where he and his family made their new home, he began taking school pictures. Over the next 50 years, he took the school or sports picture of nearly everyone in Central Texas. Later in life while on errands around the community, someone would recognize him as "the Picture Man," and tell him their story of when and where he had shot their picture. This would always lead to a huge smile.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Dawson Sunday School Class. While living at Creekside Rehab in Belton the last few years of his life, he was an active member of the Creekside Kingdom Ministries.
George is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Debbie (Rick) Bentley, Cyndie (Randy) Chapman; four grandchildren and spouses, Hunter (Krystle) Bentley, Meagan (Joel) Floyd, Thomas (Kiara) Bentley, and Grayson Williams; five great grandsons, Paxton, Warren, Luke, Jacob and Ransom, many lifelong friends, and his friends and caretakers from his Creekside Rehab Family.
Visitation will be held at the Harper Talasek Funeral Home in Temple on Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 6-8 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 11 AM at Harper Talasek Funeral Home with interment scheduled for 3:00 PM at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
