Edward R. Garcia, age 73 of Temple, passed from this life Sunday, December 18, 2022, at home. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park and Cemetery.
Edward was born on January 25, 1949, to Arthur and Lorenza Garcia in Austin, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Edward entered the military in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1975. His last duty assignment was aboard the USS Camden. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He traveled the world before coming back to his hometown of Temple. Soon after, he began his career at Mobile Chemical, working over 10 years for the company. He then worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and retired after 17 years. Edward was an active member of Goodwill Mexican Baptist Church. Along the way, he made life-long friends who have come together to support his wife, Janie, during this difficult time. Edward was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and most recently was promoted to great grandfather. He loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Edward is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lorenza Garcia.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his loving wife, Janie H. Garcia; sons, Arthur Garcia and wife, Naomi, and Jeremiah Garcia and wife, Amanda; brothers, Ernest Garcia, and Daniel Garcia; sister, Alice Garcia; 6 grandchildren, Leilani Vargas, Isaac Alford, Jaden Garcia, Andrew Garcia, Jose Alarcon-Giron, and Aspen Alarcon-Giron; and 2 great grandchildren, Emma Vargas, and Ella Vargas.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Kindred Hospice for all they have done, and to all the doctors and nurses at the Temple V.A. Hospital. To Janie Grinie for helping her sister through this process, and to Pastor Isidro Carranza for helping the family during this difficult time. And to all the family and friends who contributed to the peaceful passing of Edward, beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
A time of visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at the funeral home.
