Don Cooper

January 6, 1928 — July 10, 2016

Per his wishes, no services are planned for Don David Cooper, 88, of Houston. Mr. Cooper passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016, in Troy, Texas.

Don David Cooper was born January 6, 1928 on the family place in Olton, Texas, to Arch and Edith (Campbell) Cooper. He graduated high school from Olton High and went to work in the oil exploration/seismology business for Brown Geophysical then Shell Oil in 1945. He worked in seismology and then was retrained by Shell in computers. He worked in nearly every state west of the Mississippi before settling in Houston in 1974. He retired from Shell in 1987.

He was a man of many interests: rock/gem, arrowhead, antique iron, and shell collecting, rock cutting and polishing, and wood carving. He always had multiple projects going at any time and was always busy. If he ever sat down, he fell asleep then jumped up to go again.
He cared for his wife, Doris, through a long illness until her death in 2000. He was a caring father, friend and neighbor, frequently found mowing someone's lawn or helping with their projects. After Doris' death he had the opportunity to travel throughout the US and abroad with a long-time friend.

During his last three months of life, he was cared for by his family and friends in both Houston and later in Temple, Texas. He spent his last days at the HKS Ranch looking out at the pasture and watching his favorite hummingbirds.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arch and Edith Cooper, older brother Dale Cooper of Idaho, and his wife Doris Icenbice Cooper.

He is survived by his children: Kyla Cooper Sherrard and partner Jean Knox of Temple, Texas; Jana Cooper Huertas and husband Paul Huertas of Bourg, Louisiana; and Kim Cooper of Plano, Texas. He is survived by his grandchildren: Dawn Huertas Arevalo and husband Gil Arevalo of Harvey, Louisiana; Crofton Sherrard and wife Colleen of Troy, Texas; Rusty Huertas of Odessa, Texas; Tera Sherrard of Austin, Texas; and great-grandson Travis Paul Stone of Houma, Louisiana.
