Carl Walton Tippit was released from this life at the age of 86, and walked through Heaven's Gates on Friday, March 22, 2019 with family by his side. He was born on March 19, 1933 to Bertha Joann Waskow Tippit and Albert Jefferson Tippit of the Stringtown Community, was a third generation and longstanding member of Dyess Grove Baptist Church and in later years attended Memorial Baptist Church. He was also a 55 year member of Knob Creek Masonic Lodge #401.
As a young man he worked at various jobs including delivering telegrams for Western Union, some in envelopes with black edges which were notifications that a loved one had been killed in the war. He worked at a Sinclair Gas Station with his brother-in-law Clarence Reid, and at another station across from the Hawn Hotel where he washed cars and often complained because the cars were coated with Vaseline to make them shine. He also waited tables at Lefty's Café on 23rd and Adams, delivered milk for the Pure Milk Company when milk was sold in small glass bottles, was a salesman for Allied Fence Company, mowed lawns with his dad and served in the U.S. Navy. His full-time, permanent job was with the City of Temple Water Department, starting in July 1951 as a meter reader working alongside his dad, and retired from the City of Temple on December 31, 1992 as the Assistant Water Superintendent.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Begonia Orlandi, LaVera Burtchell and Lora Hitchcock, and a great-grandson, Zachary Randle. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Aycock Tippit, daughters Judy Herzog (Melvin) and Paula Nottingham (Earl), step-sons Wayne Aycock and Michael Aycock (Dolores), all of Temple, nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
