Mr. Bernard Steve Stephan, 85, of Austin, died on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Temple VA Hospital. Graveside services with honors will be held on Monday, July 13, 2009, at 9:00 A.M. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX. Steve honorably served his country during World War II and will always be a hero to his family. Steve was an ardent exerciser his entire lifetime and was a well known swimmer at Barton Springs and the Deep Eddie Pool. He shared his love of swimming with his grandsons and enjoyed watching his oldest grandson grow into an accomplished competitive swimmer. He lived his life with dignity and was both a maverick and a romantic.
Steve was born to Bernard Stephan and Anna Paulis in Newark, New Jersey on July 24, 1923. He had been a resident of Austin for over ten years. Prior to his retirement, he was a longtime employee of General Dynamics in San Diego, CA.
Survivors include his son, Bill Stephan, and wife, Ashley, of Magnolia, TX, one brother, Bob Stephan of Little Falls, NJ, two sisters, Marion McGovern of Port Richey, FL and Theresa Estep of Oceanside, CA. He is also survived by two grandsons, Mitch and Trevor Stephan of Magnolia, TX.
