Graveside services for Avis Sturgeon Bendure, 92, of Livingston, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 9 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple.
Mrs. Bendure passed away Wednesday, November 22 at Pine Ridge Healthcare in Livingston.
Avis was born September 8, 1925 to Benjamin and Lydia Brann Sturgeon in St. John, Maine. She was one of 13 children - nine of whom lived to adulthood. Being a Maine
girl with all those brothers and sisters, there was never a dull moment. Her high school spring breaks fell during September-October in order to pick potatoes which were a
necessity for the family to survive the winters. With the railroad just behind their house, fifty cents would take you to the nearest town 16 miles away. In her mid-twenties, she
met her husband, George, in Pennsylvania while visiting her sister. After returning home to Maine, our father had to wait until he was on leave from the Navy to find her again.
They married on October 1, 1949, and then were off to Reykjavik, Iceland, where her son was born. Her life's adventure had begun - spanning the east coast to the west.
Their 49 year marriage took them from Bath, Maine where her daughter was born, on to Rhode Island, Virginia, Georgia, California and Texas.
Our Mom raised two kids, a lot of the time by herself for the 30 years our Dad was in the Navy; without ever learning to drive and with her husband being gone from home
six months to a year at a time. Despite her quiet, shy demeanor, she was the strongest person we ever knew, so dedicated to her family.
Avis is survived by her son, Dale A. Bendure and wife Edina of Temple; daughter, B. Susan White and husband Wallace of Livingston; grandchildren, Wendi McCartt Bruton and
husband Gary of Temple; Keven Matthew White and wife Kimberly of Livingston; and two great-grandchildren, Alec McCartt Bruton and Gavyn Allen Pious White. She is also
survived by one sister, Nora Kelly, 95, of St. Francis, Maine and several nieces and nephews.
Avis is preceded in death by her husband, George Allen Bendure, Jr., who passed away on April 24, 1998; sisters, Melissa Fitzgerald, Eleanor Connors, Doris Zimmerman,
Iona Shirley; brothers, Clarence, Melvin and Benton Sturgeon.
Our Mom will be greatly missed by us all and many others. Thanksgiving 2017 has given us a greater appreciation of what it means to be truly thankful, as we know her
suffering on earth is over. Nothing comforts us more than knowing she is home with God and family.
We love you Mom (Nana)!!
