Alice M. Mitchell, 84, of Marlandwood Circle, Temple, Texas, passed away peacefully at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at HarperTalasek Funeral Home at 500 West Barton Avenue in Temple, with a visitation service set for the preceding evening, Monday, April 21 at 6 8 p.m.
Alice Margaret Mitchell maiden name: Totman was born on August 14, 1929 to Harold M. Totman and Alice W. Totman at St. Joseph hospital in Syracuse, New York.
At the outbreak of WW2, her family moved from Syracuse to their summer lake cottage at South Bay on Oneida Lake outside Syracuse where she attended a oneroom schoolhouse.
She later graduated from Syracuse High School and met her husband, William E. Mitchell, a U.S. Marine veteran just returning from the Pacific Theater of the war when they were both freshmen at Syracuse University. They were married at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Syracuse on April 10, 1948.
Alice and Bill Mitchell had three sons and the family lived in many places, including Sunnyvale, California Sikta, Alaska Evansville, Indiana and St. Louis, Missouri before settling in Temple, Texas in 1972.
She was a devoted wife and wonderful mother who put her husband and children first. She was also a wonderful daughter and caregiver to her mom who lived with the family in Temple.
Alice was also an artist, a watercolor painter and painting teacher known for her paintings and sketches of locations throughout Central Texas. She was active for decades with the Bell County fine Arts Association and enjoyed many, many dear friends in Central Texas and beyond. For several years she also worked as a volunteer at the Temple VA Hospital.
William Mitchell preceded her in death in Temple on August 10, 1995.
Alice is survived by her three sons, Mark and Bruce of Austin, Scott of Houston, one grandchild, Will of Atlanta, Georgia, daughterinlaw Susanna, two stepgrandchildren, Glenn and Kelly of Austin, four stepgreat grandchildren, two nephews, Peter and Schuyler, and three nieces, Johanna, Robin, and Michele, and two sistersinlaw Mary Totman her only brother David died in 2013 and Jayne Delforge.
She was deeply loved by all of her family and will be missed more than any words can describe.
