alignjustifyA.J. Mercer, Jr., 87 of Temple, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2008 in a local hospital. Private family burial will be at Belfalls Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple with Dr. Thomas Allen officiating.
alignjustifyA.J. Mercer, Jr. was born April 30, 1921 to Arthur J. and Pauline Nelson Mercer in Temple, Texas. Mr. Mercer earned his BS degree in Sociology from Texas AM University. On July 22, 1945, he married Ura Hudgens at Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple. He served as a Captain in the United States Army, and then went on to retire with rank of Major from the Texas National Guard. Mr. Mercer worked as the Superintendent over the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Temple for 25 years, and retired in 1984. He was a member of the Lions Club, Board of Director of the City Federation of Womens Club, Temple-Bell County Retired Teachers Association, and President of the Temple Garden Club. He also served on the Keep Temple Beautiful committee and Bell County Garden and Landscape committee. Mr. Mercer was an elder member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple where he was also a member of O.W.L.S.
alignjustifyHe is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy Starnes.
alignjustifySurvivors include wife Ura of Temple, sons; Joe Mercer and wife,Beth of Monte Alto, and Mike Mercer and wife, Nancy of Temple, grandchildren; Kelly Mercer and wife, Natalie of Frisco, Jan-Michael Mercer Herklotz and husband, Shane of Elgin, and great granddaughters; Avery Mercer, Adyson Mercer, and Tayler Herklotz.
