Adolf Otis Winkler, 88, of Temple, was called home by his Lord on Sunday, November 14, 2011. He was born, the sixth of 12 children, to Oscar and Anna Beisert Winkler on February 8, 1923 in The Grove, Texas.
Adolf was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran in The Grove and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Loebau, Texas. He married Lucile Edna Winkler at St. Paul Lutheran Church in The Grove on January 14, 1945. She preceded him in death on November 6, 2005.
Lucile and Adolf began married life farming Adolfs brothers farm while he served in WWII for 2 years, then began carpentering when his brother returned. Luciles Mother bought property in Temple when she sold her farm, so Adolf built her house in exchange for the lot next to hers. In 1953 the growing family of five moved to Temple and into a new home Adolf built. Using his carpenter skills, he built homes, service stations, post offices and numerous remodeling projects. Before retiring, he worked in Scott Whites Carpenters shop for 6 years, then traveled with Lucile to Angleton, Corpus Christi, Fairfield, Belton , Arlington, Lake Texoma Irving, building church with Laborers For Christ.
He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Temple and served numerous years on the Board of Trustees, Lutheran Laymans League member, sang in the choir and served wherever he was needed. He took his family on many memorable vacations all over the USA, loved hunting, fishing, playing dominoes, horseshoes, waterskiing and singing. The highlight of his family member birthdays was his rendition of Happy Birthday, personally or over the telephone, in his own unique style.
Adolf was preceded in death by siblings, Annie Teinert, Robert, Gus, George, and Winfred Winkler.
Adolf is survived by 2 older brothers, Paul Ernest and 4 younger brothers, Sam, Fred, Norman and Rudy children, Jeanette Schiffner and husband Frederick of Killeen, Diane Winkler of Austin, Royce Winkler and wife, Bernice, Dean Winkler and wife Beth, and Beth Schaffner and husband, Mark, all of Temple grandchildren, Capt. Ryan Schiffner, USAF, and wife, Michelle, and children James Audrey of OFallon, Illinois, Kellye Schiffner of Lewisville, London Yepez, and husband, Sean and children Taylor, Erin Christian, Chad Winkler and wife Kayla, and daughter Annabelle, all of Temple, Karl Winkler and wife, Alicia, and daughter Kylynn of Tyler, Stacie Winkler, working with the African Childrens Choir in South Africa, Mandy Winkler of Garland, Dustin Schaffner and wife, Amanda, Scott Schaffner all of San Antonio, and Dana Schaffner of Temple.
