Violet Howell

Violet S. Howell, age 95 of Temple, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020.  Graveside services will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday, January 18 at Temple Garden of Memories. A time of visitation with the family will be from 10 to 11:30 am, prior to the service, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.  A memorial service is to be held at a later date in Rockdale.

Violet was born June 30, 1924 to Harry R. Shurr and Violet Hummell Shurr in Sinking Springs, PA.  She graduated from Gilford College in Greensboro, NC with a degree in English Literature.  She had a dry sense of humor, was an avid reader and loved to quote poetry.  Violet also enjoyed traveling and nature, often bird watching, gardening and taking long walks in the woods.  She most valued her family and friends above everything else.  She would speak with so much pride about her 9 brothers that served in the military during WWII.  Violet made lifelong friends, including pen pals from Wales and Scotland.  For so many, she was the sweetest person they knew.  She will be greatly missed.

Violet is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Violet Shurr; foster parents, Charles and Hannah Hilbert; husband, W. Burney Howell; 12 brothers; and 3 sisters.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory are her son, William B. Howell Jr and wife, Lisa; daughters, Susan Barefoot and husband, Aldos; Diane Old; Cynthia A. Havard and husband, Don; and Janice S. Haverland and husband, David; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bethany Children’s Home, 1863 Bethany Rd., Womelsdorf, PA 19567 or First Presbyterian Church of Rockdale 1600 Alcoa Ave. Rockdale, TX 76567.
